Hello, or should I say Hola from Logrono.
This July, I had the opportunity to work in Logrono, Spain, and collaborate with ShootingPro Basketball camp (www.campusdebaloncesto.org) and work with some of the best adolescent basketball players focusing on life after sports.
At first, it took a lot of convincing to get me to go to Spain because I didn't think that I was ready to launch I&I's STEAMA Academy there, especially since it was a non-English speaking country. However, my dear friend and colleague Brad Branson reminded me of the positive mindset I teach in the STEAMA program. He reminded me that if I wanted to assist students with believing in themselves, then I would first have to believe in myself.
I would love to say that my trip was easy, and I didn't have any issues, but that would be a lie, and it wouldn't be illustrating a life chasing your dreams. I cried many nights because I didn't know Spanish, and a lot of what I perceived would happen didn't come to fruition. All the materials that I brought I had to redo from English to Castilian Spanish. But through my experience in Logrono, I learned a couple of things:
Never run away from an opportunity.
When problems arise, focus on trying to find the solution.
Don't be afraid of people; they will help you to reach your destination.
Pursue what you love because even with language barriers and hurdles, your passion will come through.
I would not change my experiences in Logrono because it helped me grow as an educator, a leader, and a human being. This opportunity has also promoted I&I. We received positive results from our students and our parents, and I&I has been invited to come back next summer to bring STEAMA Academy to multiple camps and summer schools. If I can pass anything on to you after this experience is, NEVER BE AFRAID TO TRY.
